I create to express the enjoyment of how I feel and to share that connection with my audience through my artistic style. Sometimes that includes using various techniques that are more common in other mediums than watercolour. Using patterns and line as well as textural impressions through eco printing and using external natural elements etc. are some examples. I express my emotions and connections to my subject through my enjoyment and choice of colours, textures, brush strokes, curiosity and adventure.
I use gestural shapes and lines of landscape and nature while being more abstracted and less representational. The decisions that I make during this painting process are my decisions and convey how I see and feel the world. I am a firm believer that we can all re-learn how to be creative and that we all have this creativeness inside us. As a Biologist and Educator, bringing that curiosity, playfulness and vulnerability forward in a safe space is key. I believe there is a connection between science and art and I have been enjoying that connection through Nature Journalling, teaching workshops and bringing this mindfulness practice to people, allowing them to slow down and connect with the spaces around them in a more observant manner through this style of journalling.
I draw my inspiration from and value my connections to the land….water, woodlands, fields and the area of the Canadian Shield, provincial parks and farmland where I grew up. The pieces that I share are chosen based on their energy, spirit and aliveness.
